Good News for Diabetics – Atherosclerotic Risk Coming Down!

According to a study from Sweden, published in the leading journal Circulation, risk and rates for complications of athersclerosis and heart failure are generally decreasing among persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus [1]. This is mainly because of attention to modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors reaching desirable target levels had lower risks of adverse outcomes. Notable among them were systolic blood pressure and glycated hemoglobin for atherosclerotic outcomes and body mass index for heart failure. This would mean that, if blood pressure and diabetes are well controlled, atherosclerotic outcomes like heart attack and stroke would come down. If obesity is controlled, heart failure comes down.
