How can you check whether a stent has been inserted in the coronary artery?

Stents are thin metallic structures and will not be visible on routine X-rays or ultrasound imaging of the heart (echocardiography). Image intensifier fluoroscopic imaging (an enhanced form of live x-ray imaging) will show the stents in coronary arteries (blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the heart).

Glossary

Echocardiography: Ultrasound imaging of the heart

Coronary arteries: Blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the heart muscle

Image intensifier: Device used to enhance the display of live X-ray images during fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy: Live X-ray imaging, usually with an image intensifier and an X-ray generator tube.
