Congenital heart malformations are much more common in still births and abortions. One form of congenital heart disease known as patent ductus arteriosus is more common in premature babies and as the prematurity increases, the occurrence also increases. Certain disorders of chromosomes like Down syndrome also increase the chance of associated congenital heart disease.
