What is the width of a standard BP cuff?

Standard sphygmomanometer (BP apparatus) cuff has a width of 5 inches. The cuff should be at least 40% of the circumference of the limb. If the standard sphygmomanometer cuff is used to measure blood pressure in the thigh or in those with arm circumference above 35 cm, a spuriously high blood pressure will be recorded. On the other hand, if the standard cuff is applied over a small arm, the pressure will be underestimated. Infants require a cuff size of around 1.5 inches and young children a cuff size of 3 inches. Obese adults will need an 8 inch cuff.
