Can those with a heart pacemaker use a walkie-talkie?

Pacemakers are devices used to give regular electrical signals to the heart when the natural pacemaker of the heart known as sinus node has ceased functioning or when the signals from the sinus node are blocked so that they do not reach all chambers of the heart. Since pacemakers have electrical circuitry, they can be interfered by strong electromagnetic waves.

Hence it will be ideal that a walkie-talkie is not placed very near the location on the chest where the pacemaker is implanted. The same precautions would apply to ham radio or amatuer radio operators and those who use digital mobile radio (DMR). If we can keep it sufficiently away, it can be prevented from interfering the pacemaker function. Many of the modern day pacemakers have built in filters to avoid electromagnetic interference.
