Cholesterol – the good, the bad and the ugly – Part 1

So what is this ‘cholesterol thing’ anyway?

It is a lipid found in all cells of our body (and helps in the formation of the cell membrane). To make it simple, it is an essential constituent of our body.

So if its a good thing, then why all the fuss about it?

Well, if you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can get deposited in the walls of the blood vessels (forming what is known as a plaque). This can lead to narrowing of the blood vessel, and can eventually get blocked due to formation of blood clot. Depending on where in the body the block occurs, it can cause heart attack (if its in the heart) or  stroke (if its in the brain).
