Bentall procedure is done for disease involving the root of aorta and aortic valve. Aorta is the largest blood vessel supplying oxygenated blood to the whole body. Usual reason for doing Bentall procedure is an enlargement of the aorta known as aortic aneurysm. Sometimes it may also be done for a break in the inner lining of aorta known as aortic dissection. In both cases there can be associated leak of the aortic valve between the aorta and the left ventricle. Left ventricle is the lower left chamber of the heart which pumps blood into the aorta.

When the aortic root is replaced, the coronary arteries which arise from the aortic root have to be re-implanted in the composite graft. Composite graft means an artificial graft for a portion of the aorta which is removed along with an artificial aortic valve. Coronary arteries are blood vessels supplying blood to the heart muscle.
