Cardiology MCQ: Alfieri stitch
Alfieri stitch is used in the treatment of:
A. Mitral stenosis B. Mitral regurgitation C. Aortic stenosis D. Pulmonary stenosis
Correct answer: B. Mitral regurgitation
Alfieri stitch is a surgical edge-to-edge repair for mitral regurgitation. Middle scallops of posterior (P2) and anterior (A2) leaflets of the mitral valve are sutured together to form a double orifice mitral valve (rough sketch in the figure of video above).
Recent introduction of mitral clip edge-to-edge repair as a percutaneous procedure has its basis in this older surgical procedure.
