Electrical Storm

Electrical Storm

Electrical Storm: Frequent ventricular tachyarrhythmias (fast rhythms originating from the lower chambers of the heart) requiring implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD: a device implanted on the chest and connected electrically to the heart with wires known as leads, which automatically detects and treats very fast heart rhythms with an electrical shock) discharge, usually more than three per 24 hours is termed as electrical storm. Brugada syndrome is an important cause of electrical storm. Supplementary medical therapy to suppress the tachyarrhythmia is useful in preventing storms. In Brugada syndrome, electrical storms may respond to administration of quinidine. When quinidine is not available some workers have also obtained similar results with quinine.
