EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation)

European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) has been developed to assess the risk of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. There is a simple additive scoring system and a more complex logistic version which can be worked out with an online or a downloadable software.

There are nine patient related factors with scores ranging from one to three. Four cardiac related factors also have scores ranging from one to three. Four operation related factors have scores ranging from two to four. The highest score of four is allotted to post infarct septal rupture, which obviously has a high operative mortality. Previous cardiac surgery, active endocarditis, critical preoperative state, poor left ventricular ejection fraction of less than thirty percent and surgery on thoracic aorta, all have three risk points each. Other risk factors have one to two points. Further details and the calculator are available at: www.euroscore.org. The revised version EuroSCORE II [1] is available at: http://www.euroscore.org/calc.html. The revised score was launched on 3rd October, 2011. calculator for patients in simple language is also available online.
