Magnetic resonance angiography (MR angio) is a non invasive technique which enables excellent visualization of the peripheral arteries. Upper most region of the image shows the descending abdominal aorta and renal arteries. Severe aortic bifurcation disease is seen below that. Severe bilateral superficial femoral artery disease is also evident still lower down. Popliteal arteries are seen nicely across the knee joint. They bifurcate into anterior and posterior tibial arteries which supply the anterior and posterior compartments of the leg respectively. Plantar aspect of the foot is supplied by the posterior tibial territory and the dorsal aspect by the termination of the anterior tibial artery which is called the dorsalis pedis artery as it crosses the ankle joint.
