Structures dilated in PDA – MCQ – Answer

Structures which are dilated in patent ductus arteriosus with left to right shunt – Correct answer: a) Pulmonary artery, left atrium and left ventricle

In left to right shunts, chambers receiving the extra blood flow get dilated. In patent ductus arteriosus, aorta can also be dilated.

Right atrium, right ventricle and pulmonary artery are dilated in atrial septal defect with left to right shunt. Though left atrium is also involved in the circuit, it is not dilated as the blood doesn’t stay there in large ASD, quickly getting shunted to the right atrium. In ventricular septal defect, both ventricles, pulmonary artery and left atrium are dilated.
