Types of ventricular hypertrophy

Concentric hypertrophy: occurs in pressure overload situations like systemic hypertension and aortic stenosis. The wall thickness increases, but there is no enlargement of the ventricular cavity.

Eccentric hypertrophy: occurs in volume overload situations like aortic regurgitation. The ventricular cavity dilates along with thickening of the ventricular wall.

Asymmetric hypertrophy: occurs in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Usually there is disproportionate hypertrophy of interventricular septum compared to the left ventricular posterior wall.
