What is HUTT?

എന്താണ് ഹെഡ് അപ്പ് ടിൽറ്റ് ടെസ്റ്റ് (HUTT)?

HUTT is short form for head up tilt test. A tilt table and ECG monitoring equipment are necessary for conducting the test. It will be ideal to have additional resuscitatory equipments at hand. The test is done for the evaluation of syncope (sudden abrupt loss of consciousness with a fall and prompt recovery). A positive HUTT would indicate the possibility of neurocardiogenic syncope, which is the common variety of syncope. The subject is strapped on to the test table to avoid a fall during the test if syncope develops. During the test, the subject is allowed lie flat on the tilt table for thirty minutes. Then the table is tilted up to an angle of 70 degrees and maintained in that position for about 20 minutes. If syncope occurs, the table is quickly brought down to the horizontal level and the test terminated. If syncope does not occur, challenging with medicines to precipitate syncope may be done.
