What is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)?

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is characterized by orthostatic tachycardia in the absence of orthostatic hypotension. That means that heart rate increases on standing, without any fall in blood pressure.

Heart rate increases 30 or more beats per minute on prolonged standing (5-30 minutes). Blood levels of noradrenaline is high in the standing position, indicating activation of the sympathetic nervous system. They may have low blood volume. Correction of blood volume can be partly achieved by increase in fluid intake.
