What is the difference between permanent AF and long term persistent AF?
Permanent atrial fibrillation can be defined as a long term atrial fibrillation in which further attempts to restore sinus rhythm are no longer planned as a joint decision by the person and the physician. Long term persistent atrial fibrillation is defined as atrial fibrillation which has persisted at least one year, when a rhythm control strategy has been decided up on. Other subsets of atrial fibrillation in this context are paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which subsides spontaneously within 7 days or with an intervention. Persistent atrial fibrillation is one which has lasted more than 7 days, including those which have been terminated by treatment after 7 days or more.
