Placental growth factor (PlGF) in cardiovascular disease

Placental growth factor (PlGF) is considered as biomarker of vascular inflammation. It is a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor family. PlGF stimulates angiogenesis and collateral formation in ischemic tissues. Plasma levels of PlGF have been shown to be increased in ischemic cardiomyopathy, in proportion to the severity of heart failure. Plasma PlGF levels also correlate positively with those of brain type natriuretic peptide (BNP).
