Sphygmomanometer cuff – MCQ – Answer

Sphygmomanometer cuff – MCQ – Answer

Width of the sphygmomanometer cuff – Correct answer: b) Should be at least 40% of the circumference of the limb

Standard sphygmomanometer cuff has a width of 5 inches. If this is used to measure blood pressure in the thigh or in those with arm circumference above 35 cm, a spuriously high blood pressure will be recorded. On the other hand, if the standard cuff is applied over a small arm, the pressure will be underestimated. Infants require a cuff size of around 1.5 inches and young children a cuff size of 3 inches. Obese adults will need an 8 inch cuff.
