Eustachian valve in right atrium

Eustachian valve in right atrium

Eustachian valve in right atrium is the valve of the inferior vena caval opening into the right atrium. It is an incomplete valve and can be seen as an echogenic ridge within the right atrium on two dimensional echocardiography. Eustachian valve is often associated with a patent foramen ovale and is involved in selectively streaming inferior vena caval blood across the patent foramen ovale causing a small right to left shunt. Eustachian valve is a vestigial remnant of the right valve of the sinus venosus seen in embryonic life.
